Fertilizers & Nutrients
Definitions for the fertilizer and nutrient terms most often seen on product labels and feed charts. Each entry explains what the term means and when it comes up, not how much to use.
base nutrients
A primary nutrient mix supplying the main N-P-K ratio a plant needs through its growth cycle. It is mixed into the irrigation water at every feeding and forms the foundation of a feeding schedule. Additional products such as bloom boosters or micronutrient supplements are added on top of it, not in place of it.
beneficial microbes
Bacteria and fungi added to soil or substrate that colonize the root zone. Some break down organic matter into forms roots can absorb, others form associations with roots that extend their reach for water and nutrients. Being living organisms, they are sensitive to chlorine, high salt levels, and extreme pH.
biostimulant
A product containing natural compounds — seaweed extracts, amino acids, humic substances — that influence a plant's own physiological processes rather than supplying nutrients directly. It is distinct from a fertilizer: a fertilizer feeds the plant, a biostimulant works on stress response, root development signaling, or nutrient uptake efficiency.
blood meal
Dried, powdered animal blood used as an organic nitrogen source. It releases nitrogen as soil microbes break it down, so the effect is not immediate the way a liquid nutrient is. Common in soil-based growing during the vegetative stage, when nitrogen demand is highest.
bloom booster
A supplement high in phosphorus and potassium relative to nitrogen, added alongside base nutrients once a plant enters its flowering stage. It does not replace the base feed; it shifts the overall N-P-K ratio toward the levels plants typically draw more of during flower development.
bone meal
Ground animal bone, a slow-release source of phosphorus and calcium. Because it depends on microbial and chemical breakdown in the growing medium, its nutrients become available over weeks rather than at the next watering. Used mainly in soil mixes rather than hydroponic or coco systems, where it cannot break down properly.
cal-mag (calcium-magnesium)
A supplement supplying calcium and magnesium, two secondary nutrients that some base nutrient lines — particularly those built around coco coir or RO water — do not include in sufficient amount. Coco coir naturally binds calcium and magnesium, and RO-filtered water contains none, so growers using either commonly add cal-mag to prevent a shortfall.
chelated nutrients
Micronutrients bonded to an organic molecule that keeps them in a form roots can absorb even when pH or other minerals in the solution would normally lock them out. The chelating molecule surrounds the metal ion, protecting it until it reaches the root, where it is released for uptake.
compost tea
A liquid brewed by steeping compost in water, often with aeration, to extract soluble nutrients and multiply the microbial population living in the compost. Applied to soil or as a foliar spray, it introduces both nutrients and living organisms rather than a fixed chemical ratio.
fertigation
Delivering fertilizer dissolved in the irrigation water rather than applying nutrients and water separately. Every watering event doubles as a feeding event, at a concentration set by the grower. It is the standard method in hydroponic and coco coir systems, where nutrients are mixed into the reservoir or dosed inline.
fish emulsion
A liquid organic fertilizer made from processed fish byproducts, supplying nitrogen along with smaller amounts of phosphorus and potassium plus trace minerals. It has a strong odor and is typically diluted heavily before application. Common in organic soil growing as a nitrogen source during vegetative growth.
flushing
Watering with plain water, without added nutrients, to move dissolved salts out of the growing medium. Done when the electrical conductivity of the runoff climbs too high, signaling that nutrients or salts have built up faster than roots are using them, or in the final period before harvest to clear residual nutrients from the medium.
foliar feeding
Applying a diluted nutrient solution directly onto leaves as a fine spray rather than through the root zone. Leaves absorb some nutrients through their stomata and surface, giving a faster response than root feeding for correcting an acute deficiency, though it supplements root feeding rather than replacing it.
fulvic acid
A small, water-soluble organic acid formed as organic matter decomposes. It binds to minerals and helps carry them across plant cell membranes, and it is often paired with humic acid, a larger, less soluble molecule with a different role in the growing medium.
guano
Accumulated droppings of bats or seabirds, mined and processed into a fertilizer input. Different sources vary widely in their N-P-K content — bat guano is often nitrogen-heavy, seabird guano phosphorus-heavy — so the specific source determines what a given guano product actually supplies.
high-frequency fertigation
A feeding schedule that delivers many small fertigation events per day instead of one or two larger ones, most often in soilless media like coco coir or rockwool with little buffering capacity. Frequent small doses keep moisture and nutrient concentration in the root zone more stable between waterings.
humic acid
A large organic molecule formed over long periods as organic matter breaks down in soil. It improves the growing medium's ability to hold nutrients and water at a physical level, and can bind free metal ions, changing how available they are to roots depending on the mineral involved.
kelp meal
Dried, ground seaweed used as a soil amendment and biostimulant source. It supplies a broad range of trace minerals and naturally occurring plant growth compounds rather than a concentrated N-P-K ratio, and is typically worked into soil or brewed into a tea rather than dosed at every watering.
leaching
The movement of dissolved nutrients out of the growing medium as water passes through it, carrying soluble salts down and out of the root zone. It happens naturally with every watering to some degree, and is done deliberately — see flushing — when salt buildup needs to be corrected.
macronutrient
One of the nutrients plants need in the largest quantities — nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium chiefly, with calcium, magnesium and sulfur sometimes grouped here too. The category is defined by the quantity a plant uses, not by how essential the nutrient is; micronutrients are just as necessary in smaller amounts.
micronutrient
A nutrient a plant needs only in small or trace quantities — iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum are the common ones. Despite the small amount required, a shortage of any single micronutrient can still limit growth, since each plays a specific role no other nutrient substitutes for.
Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium (NPK)
The three numbers printed on a fertilizer label, in that order, showing the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium it contains. A 5-10-10 product, for example, is lower in nitrogen and higher in phosphorus and potassium than a balanced 10-10-10. The ratio a grower chooses shifts across a plant's growth cycle.
nutrient burn
Leaf tip and edge discoloration, usually browning, caused by a nutrient concentration in the growing medium that is higher than roots can process. It is a symptom of overall concentration, not of a specific nutrient being toxic on its own, and is corrected by reducing feed strength or flushing the medium.
nutrient lockout
A condition where nutrients are physically present in the growing medium but roots cannot take them up, usually because the solution's pH has drifted outside the range where those nutrients stay chemically available. It looks like a deficiency on the leaves even though feeding has been consistent, because the problem is availability, not supply.
nutrient solution
The mixture of water and dissolved fertilizer salts that roots actually draw from, whether in a hydroponic reservoir or the water passing through a soil or coco pot. Its composition, concentration, and pH are what growers are adjusting whenever they mix or measure a feeding. See fertilizers.
nutrient supplements / additives
Products added on top of a base nutrient mix to supply something the base does not, such as extra calcium, a biostimulant, or a specific mineral like silica. They are formulated to complement a base line rather than stand in for it.
organic nutrients
Fertilizers derived from plant or animal material — compost, meal, manure-based inputs — rather than manufactured mineral salts. Their nutrients are typically bound in organic molecules that soil microbes must break down before roots can absorb them, which is why organic feeding depends heavily on a living, active growing medium.
osmosis
The movement of water across a membrane, such as a root cell wall, from a solution with fewer dissolved particles toward one with more, without energy input from the cell. It is the basic mechanism by which roots draw in water, and it underlies why an overly concentrated nutrient solution can pull water out of roots instead.
potash
A traditional term for potassium-containing fertilizer materials, historically potassium carbonate leached from wood ash and now referring to mined potassium salts such as potassium chloride or potassium sulfate. It is the source behind the K in many NPK products.
reverse osmosis
A filtration process that forces water through a membrane fine enough to block dissolved minerals and salts, producing water with very low mineral content. Growers use it to start feeding from a known baseline rather than working around whatever minerals happen to be in their tap water, which varies by source.
salt buildup / accumulation
The gradual concentration of dissolved mineral salts left behind in a growing medium as water evaporates or is taken up by roots faster than the salts themselves are removed. Left unchecked it raises the medium's electrical conductivity over time and can restrict root water uptake through osmosis.
secondary nutrient
Calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, a group of nutrients plants need in smaller amounts than the three macronutrients but more than micronutrients. Shortfalls — calcium and magnesium especially — are common in soilless growing when the base nutrient line and water source do not supply enough.
silica / silicon
A mineral supplement supplying silicon, an element plants take up and deposit in cell walls, particularly in stems and leaves. It is added separately from base nutrients because it can react and precipitate out of solution if mixed directly with other concentrated nutrients, so mixing order matters.
slow-release fertilizer
A fertilizer formulated so its nutrients become available gradually over weeks or months rather than immediately on application, either through a coating that degrades slowly or a chemical form that depends on microbial breakdown. It reduces how often feeding needs to be repeated, at the cost of less control over the exact concentration available at a given time.
synthetic nutrients
Fertilizers manufactured as refined mineral salts rather than derived from organic material. Because the nutrients are already in a form roots can absorb directly, they act faster than organic sources and their exact N-P-K concentration is precisely known and adjustable, which is why most hydroponic feeding programs are built on them.
vermicompost
Compost produced by feeding organic waste to earthworms, which digest it and excrete castings enriched with nutrients and beneficial microbes. It is generally milder and more consistent in composition than raw compost, since the worms have already broken the material down.
worm castings
Earthworm excrement produced by feeding worms organic matter, containing nutrients in forms already partly processed and a population of beneficial microbes carried over from the worm's gut. Usually worked into soil or brewed into compost tea rather than dosed like a liquid feed.
